ATSOCKET 5kA: special protection for LED luminaires   

With a similar size to a wristwatch, ATSOCKET transient overvoltage protectors can be installed inside a conduit, very close to the equipment to be protected, even if they are outdoors as it happens with post lamps and traffic lights. Those equipments of our streets are nowadays made with LEDs, that is, light diodes which advantage is reducing consumption and improving visibility, but that are also more sensitive than the old bulbs to electrical discharges.

ATSOCKET protectors will be installed close to the power supply sockets. They can withstand secondary lightning currents up to thousands of amperes, letting residual voltages lower than 1,5kV. ATSOCKET 5kA, in particular, is specially designed for protecting outdoor and public lighting, safeguarding these devices and therefore improving safety in rods and streets, avoiding blackouts and circulatory disorders that may even cause accidents

The use of exothermic welding described in the Spanish Low Voltage Installation Code was explained within the course
 
Aplicaciones Tecnológicas, S.A. experts give specialized courses to Industry Inspectors   

Last 26th of May, a course for industry inspectors took place in Madrid, in which the Technical Support Manager of Aplicaciones Tecnológicas participated as trainer. This course dealt with different aspects related to electrical installations and earthing checkings that the inspectors of the Spanish Ministry of Industry should perform following the Low Voltage Installation Code.

This Code states that "Connections are considered to be electrically correct if they are made, for example, by means of connection clamps or aluminothermic welding".  Furthermore, within one of the complementary technical instructions (ITC-BT-26), it is even more specifically established that the ring conductor or the electrodes should be connected safely to the metallic structure of the building or to the reinforcement of the foundations thus using aluminothermic (exothermic) welding.

This subject was reviewed during the course, as well as other ones related to lightning protection such as the need of transient and permanent overvoltage protectors.

Madrid's Metro is the second subway network within the European Union -only London has got more kilometers- and the 8th of the world. It has about 300 stations, and over two million people use it daily. Safety and service continuity are therefore essential. Control, maintenance and reparation equipment are very costly, and any failure will affect a large number of people and cause important economic damages.

Considering these figures, the risk analysis of any Metro Madrid facility will result in the need of installing a lightning protection system according to the relevant standards. In this case, the buildings have been protected using Early Streamer Emission air terminals, thus following the standard UNE21186 (NF C 17102)

Our intervention focused mainly in preventive protection using the thunderstorm warning system ATSTORM
Aplicaciones Tecnológicas, S.A. participates in the international conference Ground'2014 in Manaus (Brazil)   

GROUND is an International Conference on grounding and earthing that takes place every 2 years in Brazil. This year it was celebrated together with the International Conference on Lightning Physics and Effects, in Manaus, capital city of the exotic state of Amazonas. There, experts coming from all over the world discussed topics related with lightning effects and how to achieve protection. Aplicaciones Tecnológicas, S.A. presented a paper, together with our local partner, about the efficiency of preventive protection systems. The Conference counted also with the participation of the Brazilian Society for Electrical Protection (SB-RAI) and the Federal University of Minas Gerais, among others companies and organizations.

Besides, through our Portuguese Delegation, Aplicaciones Tecnológicas, S.A. presented our solutions ATSTORM (thunderstorm warning system) and ATLOGGER (lightning activity recorder). These systems have been already successfully implemented in several placements y Brazil and other countries for the protection of people and goods.
